This is the third time that God has commanded Moses to count the people. The Israelites were first counted just before leaving Egypt (Exodus 12:37) and they were counted again just before receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 30). Now, as God is about to make His presence manifest in the Tent of Meeting, they were counted once more.
There’s a saying in business – “You measure what’s important”. That God regularly counted the people of Israel is a wonderful reminder of His love and concern. People are important, and so God wanted to know exactly how many Israelites there were – as they were leaving Egypt, as they were receiving the Law, as they were preparing the Tabernacle.
But God doesn’t just number people. Jesus told His disciples that God went so far as to number the very hairs on the people’s heads, such was their importance to Him. (Matthew 10: 30). Little wonder that it was said of Jesus, He “lost none” of those whom the Father gave Him charge over.
That God counts is a wonderful reminder that we count to Him.
